Fairytale Advent and Christmas in Salzburg, Austria, the city of Mozart! 25

Posted on December 14, 2010 by Jennib And Friends

Advent and Christmas is undoubtedly one of the finest seasons in the city of Salzburg. When the snowflakes swirl through the air, when the children build snowmen in the Mirabell Gardens and the sweet scent of mulled wine flows through the narrow streets, even the most serious people become hopeless romantics.

Romantic Moments:
It is the season for romantic walks across the city’s hilltops, enjoying the breathtaking view of the city’s snow-covered roofs, domes and towers. The ringing of countless church bells reminds us that Christmas is near. When getting back down into the city, the merry activity at the Salzburg Christmas Markets fills us with a cozy, warm feeling and wakes fond childhood memories. The fragrance of punch and toasted almonds, hot roasted chestnuts and freshly baked apples tickles our noses; the vendors’ gingerbread hearts, nativity figures, Christmas tree ornaments, toys and warm sweaters are irresistable.

Culture and Reflection:
A variety of traditional events in Salzburg make the wait for Christmas Eve a little easier. Advent Serenades, celebrations and classical concerts offer a quiet and contemplative atmosphere.
This is also the time to take a trip to the beautiful country village Filzmoos with a sleigh ride through the mountains. Rosy cheeks and happy expressions are proof that this was a successful day – one that you will remember long afterwards.

Also learn about the history of the famous Christmas carol “Silent Night”. Joseph Mohr, writer of the song was born in the city of Salzburg and the song was the first time performed in Oberndorf, a small village near Salzburg. Make a trip to the famous “Silent Night – Holy Night” chapel there and see for yourself.

Christmas magic and Christmas markets:
The romantic Salzburg Christmas markets are well known: the historical Christmas market in Cathedral Square and

Dream Theater 4

Posted on December 04, 2010 by Jennib And Friends

History

Formation and early years (19851987)

Founding members (from left to right) John Myung, Mike Portnoy, and John Petrucci in 1985.

Dream Theater was formed in September 1985 when guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung decided to form a band in their spare time while studying at the Berklee College of Music. The pair came across drummer Mike Portnoy in one of Berklee’s rehearsal rooms, where he was asked to join the band. The trio started off by covering Rush and Iron Maiden songs in the rehearsal rooms at Berklee.

Myung, Petrucci, and Portnoy settled on the name Majesty for their newly formed group. According to the The Score So Far… documentary, they were waiting in line for tickets to a Rush concert at the Berklee Performance Center while listening to the band on a boom box. Portnoy commented that the ending of the song “Bastille Day” (from the album Caress of Steel) sounded “majestic”. It was then decided that Majesty would be the band’s name.

The trio then set out to fill the remaining positions in the group. Petrucci asked his high school band-mate Kevin Moore to play keyboards. After accepting the position, another friend from home, Chris Collins, was recruited as lead vocalist after band members heard him sing a cover of “Queen of the Reich” by Queensrche. During this time, Portnoy, Petrucci, and Myung’s hectic schedules forced them to abandon their studies to concentrate on their music, as they did not feel they could learn more in college. Moore also left his college, SUNY Fredonia, to concentrate on the band.

Classical Concerts and Canals in Amsterdam 15

Posted on November 20, 2010 by Jennib And Friends

There’s so much more to Holland’s capital than cannabis, coffee shops and the red light district. Though famed for its more seedy attractions, Amsterdam also offers plenty of high culture that doesn’t involve small bags of green herbs.

Grachtenfestival – Amsterdam’s annual canal festival – provides nine days of classical performances, made up of over 70 concerts held around 20 different locations, including a series of free performances given in the gardens and homes and on the roof terraces of canal side residents. The event, culminating with the impressive Prinesngracht concert, is held on a floating state in front of Hotel Pulitzer and attracts thousands of classical fans.

But Grachtenfestival isn’t all about old fashioned classical pieces; “Shhh…it Happens!” is a new breed of musical incorporating rock with classical music to create a musical noir that tells the story of a brother and sister who get mixed up with a bunch of out of control freaks in an abandoned theme park, which is guaranteed to take audiences on a rollercoaster ride

The festival also offers rare opportunities for aspiring classical musicians and singers to meet and learn from some of the greatest names in business. Opera singer Nelly Miricioiu, who has sung many parts in belcanto operas of Rossini, Donizett and Bellini, captivates opera audiences worldwide with her lyrical qualities and will be running a master class and searching for talented young singers during this year’s festival.

And if classical doesn’t cut it for you, Amsterdam has plenty of other festivals to float your canal boat. Queensday is the celebration of the Queen’s mother’s birthday, and the whole of Holland becomes one big party. Amsterdam turns orange and assumes a carnival atmosphere with big parties, Dutch and international artists and plenty of loud music.

Or how about Hartjesdagen, a festival where men come dressed
