Fairytale Advent and Christmas in Salzburg, Austria, the city of Mozart! 25

Posted on December 14, 2010 by Jennib And Friends

Advent and Christmas is undoubtedly one of the finest seasons in the city of Salzburg. When the snowflakes swirl through the air, when the children build snowmen in the Mirabell Gardens and the sweet scent of mulled wine flows through the narrow streets, even the most serious people become hopeless romantics.

Romantic Moments:
It is the season for romantic walks across the city’s hilltops, enjoying the breathtaking view of the city’s snow-covered roofs, domes and towers. The ringing of countless church bells reminds us that Christmas is near. When getting back down into the city, the merry activity at the Salzburg Christmas Markets fills us with a cozy, warm feeling and wakes fond childhood memories. The fragrance of punch and toasted almonds, hot roasted chestnuts and freshly baked apples tickles our noses; the vendors’ gingerbread hearts, nativity figures, Christmas tree ornaments, toys and warm sweaters are irresistable.

Culture and Reflection:
A variety of traditional events in Salzburg make the wait for Christmas Eve a little easier. Advent Serenades, celebrations and classical concerts offer a quiet and contemplative atmosphere.
This is also the time to take a trip to the beautiful country village Filzmoos with a sleigh ride through the mountains. Rosy cheeks and happy expressions are proof that this was a successful day – one that you will remember long afterwards.

Also learn about the history of the famous Christmas carol “Silent Night”. Joseph Mohr, writer of the song was born in the city of Salzburg and the song was the first time performed in Oberndorf, a small village near Salzburg. Make a trip to the famous “Silent Night – Holy Night” chapel there and see for yourself.

Christmas magic and Christmas markets:
The romantic Salzburg Christmas markets are well known: the historical Christmas market in Cathedral Square and

Dream Theater 4

Posted on December 04, 2010 by Jennib And Friends

History

Formation and early years (19851987)

Founding members (from left to right) John Myung, Mike Portnoy, and John Petrucci in 1985.

Dream Theater was formed in September 1985 when guitarist John Petrucci and bassist John Myung decided to form a band in their spare time while studying at the Berklee College of Music. The pair came across drummer Mike Portnoy in one of Berklee’s rehearsal rooms, where he was asked to join the band. The trio started off by covering Rush and Iron Maiden songs in the rehearsal rooms at Berklee.

Myung, Petrucci, and Portnoy settled on the name Majesty for their newly formed group. According to the The Score So Far… documentary, they were waiting in line for tickets to a Rush concert at the Berklee Performance Center while listening to the band on a boom box. Portnoy commented that the ending of the song “Bastille Day” (from the album Caress of Steel) sounded “majestic”. It was then decided that Majesty would be the band’s name.

The trio then set out to fill the remaining positions in the group. Petrucci asked his high school band-mate Kevin Moore to play keyboards. After accepting the position, another friend from home, Chris Collins, was recruited as lead vocalist after band members heard him sing a cover of “Queen of the Reich” by Queensrche. During this time, Portnoy, Petrucci, and Myung’s hectic schedules forced them to abandon their studies to concentrate on their music, as they did not feel they could learn more in college. Moore also left his college, SUNY Fredonia, to concentrate on the band.

What Was the Very First Thanksgiving Like? 25

Posted on November 24, 2010 by Jennib And Friends

In the early 1600s, a group of English people separated themselves from the Church of England. At that time, it was against the law for English citizens not to attend church services. Facing persecution at worst and ridicule at best, the group of Separatists fled to Amsterdam. In Amsterdam, they were free to worship as they chose, but they faced other problems. They began to blend in with the Dutch people and they felt that their new religion faced extinction if they stayed in Holland.

There had been several voyages by English settlers and explorers to the New World across the sea. There had even been a colony successfully planted in the area known as Virginia. The Separatists decided that the only way that they could worship and preserve their religion was to travel to the New Land and begin their own colony. They began plans for the voyage in 1617 and set sail for the New World in 1620.

They sailed for sixty-five days on a boat called the Mayflower and endured at least one terrible storm. There was talk of turning back, but they continued, and when they reached the New World, only one person had died during the trip.

When the voyage began, there were 120 people aboard the boat, only some of them Separatists. There were arguments between the two groups and the Separatists referred to themselves as “saints” and to the others as “strangers”. By the time they landed in Massachusetts, they had banded together and called themselves “Pilgrims”.

It is a good thing that the Saints and the Strangers decided to work together, because that first winter was brutal and killed more than half of them. By March, only forty-seven of the original 120 were still alive. The whole group had become so sick that only a handful of people were credited for keeping the survivors alive. If they had remained divided, it is likely that all of them would have died.

After the hard
