12 Days to a Healthy Holiday: Day #9 – Jingle All The Way 21

Posted on November 27, 2010 by Jennib And Friends

A few years ago my mother started a caroling party in her neighborhood around the holidays. Right around Thanksgiving the invitations would go out and everyone would be asked to bring a healthy dish of food for the pot luck style party.

It started out small, with just a few of the neighbors attending and singing, but it turned into an annual event that drew most of the neighbors to sing and those that couldn’t make it to sing were treated to a group of singers that were belting out their favorite carols. It got so popular that people would start asking about it in November and even my sister would travel from hours away just to participate and let my nieces have the experience.

I don’t think anybody involved would argue with me if I said that they weren’t classically trained singers, but that didn’t matter one lick, because they all thoroughly enjoyed the season and sharing the spirit of the holidays with their neighbors.

As a true believer in the power of music to lift ones soul and improve ones health, I think this is one of the most important things to add to your healthy holiday traditions. Just listening to your favorite music throughout the year can have a tremendous impact on your happiness and your mental health, but caroling takes that to another level.

When you sing your favorite songs not only are you exercising muscles that you typically don’t exercise you’re also lifting your spirits. You know the feeling when you’re riding in your car, you don’t think anyone is looking, so you turn up your favorite song and sing at the top of your lungs. Don’t you feel better after you do that? Now add your favorite holiday songs to the mix and imagine the spirit that will be rushing through your body.

You might not be able to gather a large group of people together to go for a caroling party, but maybe you can gather a couple of family members around an mp3 player and sing along to your favorite carols while enjoying each

Five Great Ways to Relax 0

Posted on November 20, 2010 by Jennib And Friends

No matter how you live your life it’s guaranteed that you will encounter stresses and strains on a daily basis. In the fast-paced world we all live in it is vital to learn the best ways to relax as well to free up the proper amount of time to practice these methods.

I realise it can be difficult to find spare time which is why I’ve tried to pick out five great ways to relax that are both effective and time efficient. Using all, or even just a few, of these techniques on a regular basis will help you to remain stress-free throughout the day.

Meditation

It might seem a little “new-agey” to you but meditation is without doubt one of the best methods of relaxation. There are many great free articles and videos on the internet already explaining how to meditate that you can learn from so I won’t go too heavily into the techniques but I will explain the basic principles.

First you need a space where you will be undisturbed for fifteen minutes or so. The most common posture for meditation is the lotus position however if you find yourself unable to do this you can sit down with your legs out in front of you with your back straight.

The aim of meditation is to clear your mind of all mental chatter. The best way to do this if you are a beginner is to focus entirely on your breathing. Breathe in deeply through your nose and out through your mouth. Pay attention to how the air feels as it flows through your nose to your lungs and then out again.

You don’t have to meditate for long to feel the immense benefits. Even just five or ten minutes of meditation will have a profound effect on how relaxed you feel. The important thing though is to meditate regularly, at least once a day.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy may be the easiest way to relax there is. You can go the whole hog and splash out on enough incense and candles to fill

Here’s Why These Relaxation Techniques When Stressed Work! 10

Posted on November 19, 2010 by Jennib And Friends

There’s hope because relaxation techniques when stressed are here! Stress is an everyday reality. No matter what, stress is going to plague the lives of humans at some point or another. Stress doesn’t have to be the leading cause of one’s unhappiness! Many alternatives are available to defeating this ugly plague. Massages, meditation, yoga and deep breathing can be used to diminish this issue.

Find a spa or do it yourself, massage that is! Massages are known to relief stress and tension. Either a professional can lay hands on you or you can do it yourself. Release the tightness in your shoulders by release of shoulder tension, soothing the scalp, massaging the sinus and easy on the eyes are going to also be opportunities that can be taken.

Flexing the body muscles are amazing in letting go of stress. Different poses, breathing and little movement is what this particular procedure consist of. Light music or burning candles can also make dress this tactic up making it more exciting and satisfying. Yoga works three practices into one, light movement of the body, breathing and staying in a position that stretches the muscles. Although, there are many this would be one of the simplest forms of yoga.

It’s probably the easiest stressing eliminating performance available! Possibly even most preferred, deep breathing of course. Not only does this put the abdomen and lungs to work it also provides the least movement of all tactics discussed. Breathing in fresh clean air is always a wonderful thing but when you can breath in fresh air and lose stress and anxiety that’s even better! Allowing yourself to be in nice, calm and private area is whats going to motivate this beautiful system.

Meditating needs to be done without distraction because it can break the ultimate goal of being happy and stress free. If music can help stimulate the mood or inspire stress to leave the body then, that’s a great tool to apply to this
