Happy New Year 0
Before I go on – I’d like to ask you a question -
Are you going to be making resolutions this year? Do you know that of all the people that make resolutions each December, 97% of them fail. And why do you think that is? Because people don’t follow through ; they keep doing the same thing but somehow expect to have different results. Bit silly that isn’t it?
Of all the resolutions that people make; losing weight is very high on the list. Exercise too is pretty high. It’s a fact that gym memberships go through the roof this time of year and by the end of January has totally tailed off.
I’m going to say something which is very controversial and which I’m sure the billion dollar dieting industry will hate me for but it is true
Dieting makes you fat.
Go on a diet, lose weight, go back to ‘normal’ eating’ put it back on again… it’s called ‘yo-yo’ dieting and is the scourge of dieters worldwide.
I found that out; for years I thought I was fat; and so I dieted – you name it, I tried it ; the grapefruit diet, the banana diet, the hardboiled egg diet, the cabbage soup diet, I tried the Fplan, the Atkins, I counted calories, I counted carbs, I fasted, I ate nothing but fruit, I ate nothing but vegetables, some days I even had both fruit and vegetables – oh I tried them all; and although I did lose weight on them; what I found was that as soon as I went back to ‘normal’ eating; I put it all back on again; and then some.
I’m 62 now and I was doing that for years (I mean I started when I was about 16!) but about 20 years ago I ‘found’ an amazing woman called Louise Hay. I read all her stuff and gradually I realised that what she said made absolute sense. What you think about becomes true for you. Once you change your thoughts everything in your life works. Over the years I started reading more and more, became qualified as an NLP practitioner, learned Hypnosis, EFT, Theta healing…. powerful processes that can literally change people’s lives. But it all comes down to the same thing – what we think about we become. When we love ourselves and trust ourselves everything works. Our weight stabilises, our relationships improve, money flows to us, our careers flourish.
I have this thing about the term ‘weight loss’. When we ‘lose’ something we usually want it back.
In my mind ‘lose’ or ‘loss’ has this connotation of a temporary situation (as in to lose one’s keys) we ‘lose’ our heart to somebody; we ‘lose’ someone when they die (usually a painful experience for those left behind) so it’s no wonder that when we want to ‘lose’ weight it feels temporary or uncomfortable. We want to do it as fast as possible and not deny ourselves all those ‘scrummy’ things that we love so much; let’s just get this over with and we can go back to what we like; it’s a punishment right? Maybe that’s why the weight never stays off!
So maybe we should be ‘shedding’ that weight – like a caterpillar ‘sheds’ its skin to become a beautiful butterfly. How much better does that sound and how much more positive and empowering?
I have been working on a programme to help people shed their excess weight where they never have to worry about it ever again.
By changing our limiting beliefs and replacing them with empowering ones, we can truly become whoever we want to be. It’s simple but it takes commitment and often people would rather stay in their comfort zone and not ‘delve’ too deeply. Which is fine – but of course they then wonder why nothing in their lives ever changes. They keep doing the same stuff over and over and expecting different results; this time the diet will work, they will get a new job/relationship, free themselves from money worries – whatever they are concerned about; but it doesn’t change because it’s like papering over the cracks.
I’ve watched people change from having no confidence to being able to lose weight seemingly ‘effortlessly’; get new jobs, even change career, gain more self-esteem and confidence and truly love themselves.
People expect things to happen quickly and yet what we must realise is that the weight didn’t come overnight; it took a while to pile on the pounds. So why should it come off overnight.
